From Restoration to Participation: Discovering Your Role in Missional Care

Previously, we explored how Missional University equips believers to bring holistic healing to South African communities through Redemptive Care—restoring lives by addressing deep spiritual, emotional, and societal wounds. But there’s more to the story.

Behind every act of redemptive healing lies a deeper invitation: not just to serve, but to join God in His mission. That’s the essence of Missional Care—a way of life, a theological lens, and a movement that calls every believer to become an active participant in God’s redemptive work in the world.

What Is Missional Care?

Missional Care is rooted in the understanding that God’s mission (missio Dei) is already at work in every culture, context, and community. Unlike traditional missionary approaches that often focused on sending, controlling, or converting, Missional Care begins with discernment: Where is God already working? And how can I join Him? Why discernment first? Because every Christian believer has already been sent (John 20:21).

At its core, Missional Care is about presence, partnership, and participation. It integrates word and deed, spiritual support and social action, Gospel proclamation and cultural humility across South Africa and the world. Whether it takes the form of trauma counselling in Cape Town, community advocacy in Soweto, or art therapy in Durban, Missional Care is not a method. It’s a mindset.

From Missionary to Missionizer

In this new era of mission, Missional University has embraced fresh language to capture a deeper theological shift. No longer are we merely “missionaries” sent to fix broken places. We are missionizers—those who discern, engage, and collaborate with God’s ongoing redemptive presence.

To missionize is to join in the flow of God’s love already at work in your neighborhood, school, workplace, or city. It’s to take your gifts, your vocation, your story, and bring it into alignment with the grand narrative of restoration unfolding across the world.

In other words, Missional Care is what happens when everyday people step into sacred participation.

You Don’t Have to Go Far—Just Go Deep

Contrary to what many believe, you don’t need to cross an ocean to be missional. You just need to be willing to cross the street—with eyes to see and a heart ready to serve. Missional Care happens in classrooms, boardrooms, living rooms, and on city sidewalks.

  • A teacher advocating for under-resourced learners—missionizing.
  • A healthcare worker offering prayerful presence—missionizing.
  • A social entrepreneur creating ethical employment—missionizing.
  • A neighbor who listens deeply to a hurting friend—missionizing.

God’s mission is everywhere. The only question is: Where is He inviting you to participate?

Take the Next Step: Discover Your Missional Strengths

Here’s the exciting part: You don’t have to figure this out on your own.

Missional University has developed a powerful tool to help you discern your unique calling: the Missionality Survey. This survey helps you uncover your natural missional orientation—whether it’s prophetic advocacy, relational care, intercultural engagement, environmental stewardship, or another vital expression of God’s mission.

Think of it as a spiritual compass pointing you toward the places where your passions, gifts, and God’s purposes meet.

You were made for more than comfort. You were made for a mission.

Let Your Life Become Missional Care in Action

Missional Care is not a program. It’s a way of being in the world—awake to God’s presence, attuned to people’s pain, and committed to holistic healing.

It’s Redemptive Care with a relational core. It’s a Christian witness with cultural humility. It’s Gospel-shaped living that sees no divide between the sacred and the everyday.

And it begins with a simple but profound step: saying yes.

Say yes by taking the Missionality Survey.
Say yes by discerning your role in God’s mission.
